Burnout

Stop running on fumes. Start healing at the root.

Burnout probably wasn't on your radar. You're the one who handles things. You lead the meeting, close the deal, hold it together for everyone, and then collapse in your car before the drive home. You've powered through exhaustion before. But this time, doubling down isn't working like it usually does.

You're still performing at a high level on the outside. But on the inside? You feel like you're running on fumes, snapping at people you love, and quietly wondering, "When did I stop caring about the things that used to light me up?"

Here's what no one tells driven, high achieving women: burnout isn't a productivity problem. It's your nervous system waving a white flag. Your body and brain have been in survival mode for so long that the system built to protect you has started working against you. No amount of time management hacks or "self-care Sundays" will fix something that runs this deep.

You're Not Failing. You're Burned Out.

Burnout in high achieving women rarely looks like lying on the couch unable to function. It's sneakier than that. You're still hitting your numbers, still leading the team, still showing up. But underneath the performance, something has shifted.

Burnout often looks like:

▸ Crushing it at work, but it takes everything you have just to get through the day

▸ Feeling resentful toward the career, relationships, or goals you used to love

▸ Re-reading that email fourteen times before hitting send because decisions that used to come easily now feel paralyzing

▸ Cycling between irritable and emotionally flat, and not recognizing either version of yourself

▸ Imposter syndrome getting louder, whispering "everyone's about to find out you're a fraud", despite a track record that says otherwise

▸ Your body keeping score: headaches, jaw tension, insomnia, a constant hum of anxiety that follows you everywhere

Burnout doesn't just drain your energy. It rewires how you see yourself. The confident, decisive woman is now second-guessing every conversation, every choice, every move. Imposter syndrome takes over where self-trust used to live. That's not weakness. That's what happens when your system has been in overdrive for too long without addressing what's underneath.

Why Weekly Therapy Keeps You Spinning Your Wheels with Burnout

If you've tried traditional therapy for burnout, you may have experienced something frustrating: spending weeks talking about stress management and coping skills, feeling momentarily lighter, and then by Thursday you're right back in the same overwhelm. The same dread. The same quiet question: "How much longer can I keep doing this?"

That's because most approaches treat burnout like a surface-level stress problem. They hand you tools to manage symptoms without ever getting to the real root.

The truth is, burnout in high achieving women almost always has roots deeper than your current workload:

▸ A childhood where your worth was tied to performance

▸ Developmental trauma that taught you rest is dangerous, or that slowing down means you'll be left behind

▸ A parent with undiagnosed mental health or substance use issues who needed you to be the "easy" one

▸ Imposter syndrome rooted in old beliefs like: "If I stop producing, everyone will see I'm not enough"

▸ Neurodivergence that was never identified or supported, leaving you to mask your way through life at an unsustainable cost

These roots don't respond to coping strategies. They need focused, deep healing. And that's exactly what a therapy intensive is designed to do.

Healing Burnout at the Root with Therapy Intensives

My approach to healing burnout is built around therapy intensives, not the slow drip of 50-minute weekly sessions. Think of it like this: in weekly therapy, you dip a small cup into a bucket of pain, and then time's up. The rest stays stirred up. In an intensive, you stay with the work long enough for the water to actually clear.

Intensives give your mind and body the uninterrupted time they need to move through what's been holding you back. Instead of stopping just as things start to open up, you stay with the process until real relief settles in. That's what allows the shift from "I'm holding it together" to "I actually feel calm and steady."

I integrate three powerful modalities to address burnout on every level:

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps your brain reprocess the memories and beliefs stuck on repeat. The ones fueling imposter syndrome, the conviction that your value depends on your output, or the belief that you can never let anyone see you struggle. EMDR targets these stuck points so your nervous system can finally let go.

IFS (Internal Family Systems) gives us a way to work with the internal drivers behind your burnout. That relentless inner critic? The part that can't stop working? The exhausted part that gave up being heard years ago? IFS helps us meet each of these parts with curiosity, so they no longer have to run the show.

Somatic Experiencing (SE) addresses how burnout lives in your body. The chronic tension. The shallow breathing. The jaw that won't unclench. SE helps your nervous system shift out of survival mode and into a state where rest and recovery are actually possible.

These three modalities work together inside the intensive format to create a comprehensive burnout healing experience that's tailored to your specific history, your specific patterns, and your specific goals. No cookie-cutter protocols. No one-size-fits-all treatment plan.

What Your Burnout Intensive Looks Like

Everything starts with a free 45-minute consultation where we dig into what you're experiencing and what you want to be different. I'll ask about your goals, your history, and what has or hasn't worked before. From there, I'll provide an estimated number of days for your intensive so you know exactly what to expect.

During your intensive:

▸ A standard processing day runs from 9 AM to 3 PM at my office, with an hour for lunch

▸ We identify key goals, limiting beliefs, and the target memories fueling your burnout and imposter syndrome

▸ Three 90-minute processing sessions throughout the day, with as many breaks as you need

▸ The last 30 minutes to calm and regulate, and to plan for the next day

▸ Subsequent days follow the treatment plan we build together on day one

When your intensive is complete, I provide a comprehensive treatment summary covering everything we worked on, any major parts-work completed, and areas that may benefit from continued support. If you're working with another therapist, I'll coordinate a debriefing call to connect your intensive experience to your ongoing therapy goals.

Traveling to the Denver area for your intensive? I'll recommend accommodations near my office so you can focus entirely on healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The most effective therapy for burnout goes beyond surface-level coping skills and targets the root of the issue. That's why I use a combination of EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Somatic Experiencing (SE) inside a therapy intensive format. EMDR reprocesses the stuck memories and beliefs fueling the burnout cycle. IFS works with the internal parts driving the relentless pace. And SE addresses how burnout has settled into your body. Together, these modalities heal burnout on every level, not just manage the symptoms.

  • If you've tried resting, taking time off, setting boundaries, and reading every self-help book on the shelf and you're still running on empty, that's a sign burnout has deeper roots than willpower can fix. For high achieving women especially, burnout is rarely just about workload. It's often tied to old patterns, developmental trauma, or beliefs like "my worth depends on my output." When the standard strategies aren't working, focused therapeutic work can help you heal what's actually driving the exhaustion.

  • The best treatment for burnout addresses the root cause, not just the symptoms. For many high achieving women, burnout is driven by unprocessed trauma, imposter syndrome, and deeply held beliefs about worthiness and rest. A therapy intensive using EMDR, IFS, and Somatic Experiencing can target those stuck points in a focused, concentrated format. Instead of spending months in weekly sessions talking about stress management, you do the deep work in days and walk away with real, lasting relief.

  • Burnout typically progresses through five stages: the honeymoon phase (high energy, total commitment), the onset of stress (certain days become harder), chronic stress (symptoms become persistent and hard to ignore), full burnout (functioning drops and everything feels like too much), and habitual burnout (exhaustion and detachment become your default state). Most high achieving women don't recognize burnout until stage three or four because they've built their identity around performing through pain. If you're reading this, you're likely past the point where "just push through" is a viable strategy.

  • It depends on what's driving it. If burnout is rooted in a temporary workload issue, changes to your schedule and environment may help relatively quickly. But for high achieving women whose burnout is tied to deeper patterns like developmental trauma, imposter syndrome, or a lifetime of tying worth to performance, recovery requires more than surface-level adjustments. A therapy intensive can create significant shifts in days rather than months or years. Many of my clients start to feel a shift within the first few hours of their intensive.

  • High functioning burnout is one of the sneakiest forms because you're still performing at a high level on the outside. You're still leading, still delivering, still showing up. But inside, you're depleted, disconnected, and running on autopilot. Healing this kind of burnout requires getting underneath the performance to the patterns that keep the cycle going. Therapy intensives are especially effective for high functioning burnout because the format matches how driven women operate: focused, efficient, and designed to produce real results in a compact timeframe.

  • A therapist who specializes in trauma healing and the deeper roots of burnout can absolutely help. The key is finding someone who goes beyond coping strategies and stress management. Burnout in high achieving women is often connected to unprocessed experiences, limiting beliefs, and nervous system dysregulation. I specialize in using EMDR, IFS, and Somatic Experiencing in an intensive format to address those root causes directly, so you're not spending months talking about the same patterns without relief.

  • The 3 R's of burnout are commonly described as Recognize (acknowledging the signs), Reverse (undoing the damage through support and stress management), and Resilience (building habits that prevent recurrence). While this framework is a useful starting point, for high achieving women with deeper burnout, the "reverse" stage often requires more than lifestyle changes. When burnout is driven by developmental trauma, imposter syndrome, or nervous system dysregulation, therapeutic work like EMDR and IFS can help you heal at the root so you're not just building resilience on top of unresolved pain.

  • Most medical professionals address burnout through recommendations like time off, lifestyle modifications, and sometimes referrals to therapy. These steps can be helpful for mild burnout, but they often miss the deeper picture. For driven women whose burnout is rooted in trauma, imposter syndrome, or a nervous system stuck in survival mode, a more targeted approach is needed. Therapy intensives using EMDR, IFS, and Somatic Experiencing work directly with the patterns and memories driving the burnout cycle, creating shifts that lifestyle changes alone typically can't.

  • There's no one-size-fits-all cure because burnout has different roots for different people. But for high achieving women, the most effective path I've seen in 18+ years of clinical work is getting to the core of what's driving the cycle and healing it there. That means identifying the stuck memories, limiting beliefs, and nervous system patterns underneath the exhaustion, and doing the focused, deep work to resolve them. A therapy intensive creates the space to do exactly that, often accomplishing in days what traditional weekly therapy takes months or years to address.

Trade out panic and anxiety for unshakable self-trust.
